Dr. Anum Najam

"Disability is not about health issue, it is about discrimination and systemic exclusion. It must be addressed as a question of fundamental human rights"

Provincial Coordinator (AJK), NFWWD | Consultant Psychiatrist | Chevening Scholar | Disability Inclusion Advocate |

After surviving a violent attack in 2008 that left her with a spinal cord injury and complete paralysis of all four limbs (quadriplegia), she transformed her tragedy into a powerful story of perseverance and purpose. Despite the immense physical and emotional challenges, Dr. Najam chose to return to her medical studies just months after her injury. Supported by her family, she completed her medical degree in a wheelchair and went on to specialize in psychiatry. Her deep understanding of trauma, healing, and resilience shapes her unique approach to mental health care.

She served as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) Muzaffarabad, providing mental health services to individuals facing a wide range of psychological conditions. Her commitment to mental health, especially for underserved and trauma-affected populations, has been recognized nationally and internationally.

In recognition of her exceptional contributions and leadership potential, she was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship. She went on to complete her MSc in War and Psychiatry at King’s College London, where she focused on the intersection of conflict, trauma, and mental health.

Today, Dr. Najam is not only a medical professional but also a strong advocate for disability rights, accessibility in education, and inclusive healthcare systems. Through her story and work, she continues to challenge stereotypes and inspire countless individuals across Pakistan and beyond.
